| EAGLE'S WINGS A newsletter of St. John's Episcopal church in columbus, Texas where the words of the gospel of the beloved disciple are believed, preached, taught, studied and practiced in our daily Christian life. The Eagle has a very rich symbolic history. An early legend held that the eagle would periodically renew is youth (or plumage or eyesight) by flying near the sun and then plunging into a lake or fountain. On this basis the eagle became a symbol for the Resurrection. Since the eagle soars upward, it also became a symbol for Christ's Ascension. Eagles also represent Christians who have been baptized into Christ, who have died and risen with Him. The eagle is also a symbol of St. John the Evangelist because of his "souring" witness to Jesus' divine nature. (The symbols for the four Evangelists ~ The Eagle, the winged lion, the winged man and the winged ox are derived from Ezekiel's vision of four living creatures, although Ezekiel's description is most likely of cherubim.) Isaiah 40:31: "but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." NIV Ezekiel 1:10: "Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man,and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle." NIV The high soaring eagle of the emblem of John because in his narrative he rises to loftiest heights in dealing with the mind of Christ. John's evangelical symbol is the Eagle, apparently because of the "high flying" introductory ideas of his Gospel and because of the sky-dwelling visions of his Revelation. (taken from multiple sources on the internet) I pray that the symbol of the Eagle is a very positive symbol and metaphor for St. John's Episcopal Church here in Columbus. I pray that this congregation will "soar in our Witness to Jesus Christ," be a "living example of His resurrection power" and "rise to new heights as we grow in the mind of Christ." I pray that Isaiah 40:31 will become a special verse for us a congregation. |
